Hilton eyes LatAm as prime region for Homewood expansion
Officials with Hilton believe the opening of Homewood Suites by Hilton Silao Airport signifies the beginning of a large push for the extended-stay brand into Mexico and Latin America, writes Hotel News Now’s Sean McCracken.

“We’re trying to narrow the scope of what we’re offering in each of the brands so people (in Latin America) have brand awareness,” said Juan Corvinos, VP of development in Latin America and the Caribbean for Hilton.

Hyatt and Oasis partnership meets customer demand
Hyatt Hotels Corporation made an undisclosed minority investment in home-sharing platform Oasis July 2017. As of 1 March, the company is extending its World of Hyatt loyalty program to Oasis properties, reports HNN’s Dana Miller. Officials say the partnership will help meet the needs of high-end and cross-generational travelers.

“We see (Oasis properties) as a great extension for our members when they want more space or they have a longer trip planned (and) to have the opportunity to (stay) in the Hyatt program and portfolio and gain the benefits of World of Hyatt,” said Amy Weinberg, SVP, World of Hyatt.

Reversal on joint-employer status forces industry to take pause
The U.S. hotel industry celebrated a National Labor Relations Board’s ruling on joint-employer status in December 2017, which was favorable for employers. But the NLRB reversed that decision at the end of February, putting hoteliers back in wait-and-see mode, due to a conflict of interest with a board member, writes HNN’s Bryan Wroten.

“Because we vacate the board’s earlier decision and order, the overruling of the Browning-Ferris decision is of no force or effect,” the board wrote in its decision, meaning the Hy-Brand Industrial decision is “vacated and set aside for the purpose of further proceedings before the board.”

There is strong hope within the business community that the reversal on Hy-Brand Industrial will be temporary, said Andria Ryan, partner at Fisher & Phillips. And for the time being, the industry should hold tight and revert to what they likely had in place under Browning-Ferris, she added.

STR: US, Central/South America January 2018 hotel performance
During January, the U.S. hotel industry reported positive year-over-year results in the three key performance metrics, according to data from STR, parent company of HNN.

Occupancy grew 0.9% to 54.5%, average daily rate rose 2% to $123.33, which pushed revenue per available room up 2.9% to $67.17.

For the same time period, the Central/South American region also reported positive year-over-year growth, according to STR data.

Occupancy rose 7.7% to 56.2%, ADR increased 5.6% to $106.24 and RevPAR jumped 13.7% to $59.74 in the region overall.

Deals and developments

  • Interstate Hotels & Resorts announced it has acquired management of 20 U.S. hotels from Gateway Hospitality Group for an undisclosed amount. The portfolio totals 2,544 rooms from brands such as Hilton and Hyatt.
  • A 150-key Ritz-Carlton resort in St. Kitts is expected to open in 2021, and will be part of a larger, multi-phased development project.
  • In addition, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts announced it is also embarking on a multi-million dollar renovation of its 196-room Four Seasons Resort Nevis in St. Kitts this year.
  • W Hotels Worldwide announced the opening of its first Central America hotel: the 203-room W Panama.
  • InterContinental Hotels Group recently launched Avid Hotels franchising in Mexico. The company currently has 75 signed franchise agreements in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group officially rebranded to Radisson Hotel Group, announcing the change at the International Hotel Investment Forum in Berlin.
  • Tru by Hilton has expanded its brand into three new states: Texas, Virginia and Iowa. Openings include the 91-room Tru by Hilton Garland Richardson, 106-key Tru by Hilton Farmville and the 82-room Tru by Hilton Cedar Rapids Westdale.
