An investigation found malware installed on the hotel’s payment card processing system that copied guests’ payment card data.
LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 26, 2017 -- Today, the Galt House Hotel announced that it has addressed an incident involving unauthorized access to its payment card system. The Galt House Hotel greatly values its relationship with guests and understands the importance of protecting their payment card information.
After being alerted to the potential information security incident, the Galt House Hotel immediately initiated an investigation of the payment card system that supports card acceptance. In addition to its own internal review, the Galt House Hotel engaged a leading computer forensics firm to assist and coordinated closely with law enforcement. OnJune 26, 2017, its investigation determined that malware had been installed on its payment card processing system that copied some guests' payment card data, including the cardholders' names, payment card account numbers, card expiration dates, and verification codes. The investigation determined that payment card data of certain guests who used their cards at the Galt House Hotel from December 21, 2016 to April 11, 2017 had been obtained by an unauthorized person.
The Galt House Hotel has resolved the issue and continues to work with the computer forensics firm to further strengthen the security of its systems to help prevent this from happening again. In addition, the Galt House Hotel is working with the payment card networks so that the banks that issue payment cards can be made aware and initiate heightened monitoring.
As a best practice, guests should always remain vigilant to the possibility of fraud by reviewing their payment card statements for any unauthorized activity. Unauthorized charges should be reported to the card issuer immediately because payment card rules generally provide that cardholders are not responsible for unauthorized charges reported in a timely manner.
